Channel 4 is airing a brand new documentary on the Spice Girls’ rise to international fame to mark 25 years since the release of their iconic debut single “Wannabe”. Girl Powered: The Spice Girls will air in 2021 and feature archival footage and “revealing interviews” detailing how Posh, Baby, Ginger, Sporty, and Scary Spice fought for success against a backdrop of Britpop titans such as Oasis and Blur. “The idea of using the story of the supremely popular and mould-breaking Spice Girls to make a multi-layered social history series was too good to pass up,” said Alisa Pomeroy, Channel 4 commissioning editor of documentaries. “The Spice Girls mirrored and influenced a generation of women and now, nearly 30 years since their formation, their story sheds light on the coming of age of modern feminism in ways we can fully appreciate for the first time.” The Spice Girls, who originally split in 1999 after nine number one singles in the UK, have since reunited for two comeback tours in 2007 and 2019 (sans Posh). While their 2007 comeback was captured in a BBC documentary, Giving You Everything, the Channel 4 documentary announcement comes amid reports that the group will head out on a world tour in 2021 to mark their 25th anniversary. Four members of the girl group – Mel C, Mel B, Geri Horner, and Emma Bunton – are reportedly planning shows across Australia, Europe, and America. Stay tuned.
