As the titular characters in Malcolm & Marie, the pair play a filmmaker and his girlfriend, whose relationship unravels over the course of an evening, as they wait for reviews of his latest film. The preview takes them on an emotional rollercoaster as they cook, fight, smoke, and generally look glamorous in black and white. Besides casting the Euphoria star in a lead role, the film is written and directed by the acclaimed show’s creator, Sam Levinson. Levinson previously directed the 2018 feminist thriller Assassination Nation. In a recent interview on Pharrell Williams’ podcast, OTHERtone, Zendaya says that the idea for Malcolm & Marie came from “quarantine conversations” with Levinson, in which the pair discussed “wanting to create something and wanting to do it safely”. The star also talks shooting the film in lockdown, adding: “We all quarantined and stayed in this very small area in the middle of nowhere. We shot in this house… we weren’t allowed to leave or go anywhere.” “I’m doing my own hair and make-up in the bathroom and brought a lot of my clothes to help with set (decoration).” “I am so grateful to this cast and crew, many of whom are my Euphoria family, for coming together during such uncertain times,” said Levinson, when the film was acquired by Netflix in September. “We felt privileged to be able to make this film together and we did so with a lot of love.” Watch the trailer for Malcolm & Marie – which premieres on Netflix on February 5 – below.
